CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The defectors screamed.

The police swarmed into the cave, bullets shrieking.

The assault tore through a toddler, and her mother screamed, only for bullets to take her down seconds later. An elderly woman fell, bleeding, dying. Her husband knelt above her, and bullets ripped through his head. Tenzin's sons tried to run, but the rifles mowed down the young monks.

Kay leaped behind the cauldron of stew, pulling Ellie with him. Bullets slammed into the pot, raising sparks. Kay cursed his carelessness. He had not taken his gun to dinner. The weapon was higher up in the cave system, resting among mushroom crates near the cave exit.

Instead of a gun, Kay grabbed the cauldron. It burned his palms. Kay screamed, but he wouldn't release the pot.

"Pat, help!" he cried.

The giant redhead had taken a bullet to the arm. But he still whipped into action. He understood.

The two men gripped the massive pot, lifted it overhead, and hurled it at the equalizers.

Several equalizers fell. The cauldron crushed one person. Stew flooded from the pot, spilling over other equalizers. They screamed, desperately trying to slap off the burning stew.

Kay ran, barreled into one policeperson, and knocked xer down. Pat plowed into two other equalizers. Howling, the giant began slamming their heads on the cave floor.

Kay leaped over puddles of blood and stew. He ran higher up the cave system and entered a circular cavern. From there, through a jagged opening in the stone wall, he had a view of the forest outside. He glimpsed more police among the trees.

How did they find us? How many are there?

He raced between the crates of mushrooms, found his gun, and rose firing.

At the cave opening, an equalizer fell.

Another equalizer returned fire. Kay knelt behind the crate. Wooden slats shattered and mushrooms spilled. Kay waited for the equalizer to reload, then rose from behind the crate, firing fast and hard. Bullets ripped into the equalizer's arm and hand. A shot through the neck finished the job.

But there were more equalizers outside. Kay could hear them clattering up the mountainside. Bullets flew through the cave entrance, and Kay took cover behind another crate.

Defectors came running from deeper in the caves. Ellie, Tilly, and a handful of others. No more than a dozen. They all took cover behind crates. The other refugees must all be dead.

But Ellie is alive, Kay thought. Thank God, Buddha, or whoever else is up there. Ellie is alive.

Pat crouched by Kay behind the crate. The giant ginger hefted a white Equapol rifle. "Got me a nice little prize."

Ellie and Tilly had grabbed Equapol rifles too. That meant four defectors with guns. All four were firing at the forest, holding back the police. The equalizers stood among the trees. They tried to enter the cave, but the hailstorm of bullets held them back.

"How the hell did they find us?" Ellie shouted over the roar of guns.

Tilly glowered. "They followed you here! You and your damn mindcap."

"My mindcap can't be tracked!" Ellie said. "It's a military-grade mindcap."

"Well, they must have hacked it!" Tilly said.
